Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest and most important building in Abu Dhabi. It is home to the city's fir st permanent structure, the watchtower. Built around the 1790s, the tower overlooked the coastal trade routes and protected the "Bani Yas" tribe established on the island. Qasr Al Hosn comprises two iconic buildings: the Inner Fort (originally built in 1795) and the Outer Palace (1939-45). Over the centuries, it has housed the ruling family, the seat of government, an advisory council and the na onal archives. It is now the na o n's living memorial and narrator of Abu Dhabi's history. It sums up Abu Dhabi's development from a tribe dependent on fi shing and the pearl trade in the 18th century, to a modern, global city.
