ROCS Holidays 30-Day Grand Canadian Train Journey
DAY 2 MONDAY, 1 JULY 2024 FRANKFURT - HALIFAX
On arrival into Halifax please make your own way to your hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring.
The capital city of Nova Scotia on Canada’s eastern coast, Halifax is highly regarded for its picturesque coves, storied lighthouses and ancient maritime history. Home to one of the world’s longest downtown boardwalks, you can visit quaint shops, restaurants, farmers markets or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the latter of which tells tales of sailors, shipwrecks and the city’s role in the Titanic tragedy. Nearby Peggy’s Cove houses the iconic lighthouse you’ll see on postcards, and local restaurants serve up lobster rolls you have to taste to believe. Just off the coast of Nova Scotia, another world awaits. Enormous humpback whales migrate north for the summer and are often visible on a whale watching tour from April to June or August to October. On land, eastern coyotes and cougars are most active after dark, and black bears can sometimes be seen foraging for food with cubs through the summer months. In Halifax city, however, these larger mammals typically stay away, leaving you free to enjoy the beautiful scenery of rugged coasts and sparkling waves. There is so much to do in Halifax’s outdoors, from hiking, swimming, cycling and surfing to guided and active adventures. Play a round of golf at one of five different courses, go kayaking along the coast or take a trip to a scenic lighthouse and enjoy a lobster roll in the sun. The outlying 100 Wild Islands is one of the last remaining intact and ecologically rich island groups of its size in North America, and the Cabot Trail (on Cape Breton Island) is considered one of the world’s most scenic destinations.
