Built on the herring trade and modernised by the oil trade, Lerwick is Shetland’s only real town, home to a third of the islands’ population. It has a solidly maritime feel, with aquiline oil boats competing for space in the superb natural harbour with the dwindling fishing fleet. Wandering along atmospheric Commercial St is a delight, and the excellent Shetland Museum provides cultural background.
