ROCS Guided Holidays - Breathtaking Georgia 2026
DAY 5 AKHALTSIKHE - VARDZIA CAVE TOWN - RABATI
After breakfast, on the way to Vardzia, we’ll traverse the stunning landscapes of the Mtkvari Valley, where medieval terraces once used for orchards and vineyards still dot the hillsides. We’ll make a photographic stop at the Khertvisi Fortress, a 10th-century structure that offers sweeping views of the valley. Vardzia, a city that once housed 50,000 people and spanned 9 stories, was heavily damaged by earthquakes and invasions over the centuries. Today, however, the site is still home to ancient churches, refectories, cellars, accommodations, a pharmacy, and more. The highlight of our visit is the 12th-century Church of the Virgin Mary, known for its exceptional frescoes, including a portrait of King Tamar, painted during her lifetime.
BREATHTAKING GEORGIA 2026
We’ll also have the opportunity to exit the city through the ancient medieval tunnels.
On our return to Akhaltsikhe, we’ll visit the magnificent Rabati Complex, a collection of historical and cultural monuments that offers a fascinating glimpse into Georgia’s past.
The day concludes with an overnight stay in Akhaltsikhe, with dinner at the hotel.
