Old customs and ancient history are intermixed with cultural entertainment and hi-tech innovation. Lisbon is ageless, but it loves company, as you’ll find out, maybe while you’re listening to some Fado music. After all, Lisbon is famous for its hospitality and the family-like way it welcomes visitors. The cuisine is dedicated to creating over a thousand ways to cook the beloved bacalhau (salted cod), and where you’ll find hotels and restaurants to suit every taste, budget and requirement. This is where you’ll find the city’s most popular and best-known areas. The historic centre – the Baixa Pombalina, with its traditional shops and museums. The Baixa is a must for anyone visiting Lisbon. Besides containing countless tourist attractions, they also feature a vast number of cultural and food spots that are very popular with the locals. Baixa, a more traditional and authentic neighbourhood, serves up souvenir shops, famous patisseries and adventurous eateries. The Baixa district has large classical avenues flanked by houses covered in tiles, in typical Lisbon style. This neighbourhood houses the capital’s most emblematic squares and streets. The district starts in Restauradores Square (Praça dos Restauradores), continues up Avenida da Liberdade, through Praça Marquês de Pombal (Marquis of Pombal Square) and from this point forward is considered “Modern Lisbon”.
