DAY 1 FLIGHT TO ROME

Meet your ROCS tour manager for our flight to Rome. The Eternal City is one of the oldest in the world, a metropolis where modern life, impressive monuments, and archaeological sites coexist. On arrival, we transfer to the Mama Shelter Hotel, situated in the heart of the Eternal City, just a short walk from the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Square.

DAY 2 PAPAL BASILICAS AND SCALA SANTA

Breakfast, and today we visit some of the Papal Basilicas. We begin with the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , one of the four major Papal Basilicas and one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome. It is also the largest Marian church in the city. Here, we find a relic of the Holy Crib, the manger in which baby Jesus was laid to rest. The first Christmas Night Mass was celebrated here, in a church where art and spirituality blend in perfect harmony. It is one of the first churches built to honour the Holy Virgin. We also visit another important basilica, St John Lateran , considered the mother of all churches. Originally serving as the Papal residence, it is now the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. The Basilica of St John Lateran has played a significant role throughout history; it was here that all popes were enthroned until 1870. Today, the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is where the Pope, as Bishop of Rome, celebrates the Holy Thursday Mass. The 14th-century wooden shrine holds pieces of a wooden altar once used by St Peter. The canopy over the altar contains two bust reliquaries holding parts of the skulls of Saints Peter and Paul. We then cross the road to visit the Scala Santa , the Holy Stairs, which are said to have been part of Pontius Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem. They were brought to Rome as a holy relic, and it is believed that Jesus climbed these steps when he was brought before Pilate.

We take time to visit and pray.

Next, we take the coach to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme , the largest Franciscan church in the world. Its most notable features are its sixteen chapels, many decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils. Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by St Francis himself. The basilica houses important relics of Our Lord’s crucifixion, including the largest fragments of the True Cross of Jesus Christ, brought here by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine. Other relics include a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, one of the nails used at the Crucifixion, also brought here by Saint Helena, as well as the finger of Saint Thomas, which he placed into the hands of the risen Lord. The Titulus Crucis is a piece of wood claimed by some to be the actual sign placed on the cross above Jesus’ head 2,000 years ago, proclaiming, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” We then return to our hotel for some free time before heading to the Vatican to participate in the Jubilee celebrations.

DAY 3 ETERNAL ROME CITY TOUR

After breakfast, we set out to explore the beautiful city of Rome. Our first stop is Janiculum Hill , where we take in breathtaking panoramic views of the historic centre. We then visit San Paolo Fuori le Mura (St. Paul Outside the Walls), one of the four Major Papal Basilicas, and the second largest after St. Peter’s. Built on the burial site of St. Paul the Apostle, this grand church boasts enormous marble columns and magnificent mosaics. Next, we make a photo stop at the world famous Colosseum , the site of thousands of gladiatorial battles, contests between men and wild animals, and even mock naval battles. A short drive takes us to Piazza Navona , where we admire the beautiful fountains. From there, we take a short walk to the Pantheon , a 2,000-year-old Roman temple. Along the way, we pass Villa Madama , a 16th century Roman villa, now the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Our next stop is the Trevi Fountain , the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous in the world. Tradition says that tossing a coin into the fountain ensures a return to Rome.

DAY 4 VATICAN + FREE TIME

Breakfast, and we head to the Vatican to visit St Peter’s Basilica , one of the holiest sites in Christianity. The interior of the church is truly fascinating, with gold ceilings, marble floors, and richly decorated paintings and works of art by some of the greatest masters who ever lived. Here, we will attend Holy Mass in St Peter’s Square. After Mass, feel free to explore the city at your own leisure.

DAY 5 RETURN FLIGHT TO MALTA

Early breakfast, then we check out of our rooms and transfer to Rome Fiumicino Airport for our flight back to Malta.
