We take time to visit and pray.

Next, we take the coach to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme , the largest Franciscan church in the world. Its most notable features are its sixteen chapels, many decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils. Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by St Francis himself. The basilica houses important relics of Our Lord’s crucifixion, including the largest fragments of the True Cross of Jesus Christ, brought here by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine. Other relics include a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, one of the nails used at the Crucifixion, also brought here by Saint Helena, as well as the finger of Saint Thomas, which he placed into the hands of the risen Lord. The Titulus Crucis is a piece of wood claimed by some to be the actual sign placed on the cross above Jesus’ head 2,000 years ago, proclaiming, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” We then return to our hotel for some free time before heading to the Vatican to participate in the Jubilee celebrations.
