When to visit With most of the country lying close to the coast, temperatures are mainly mild with the far north having sub-tropical weather during summer and the inland alpine areas of the South Island dropping to near freezing in winter to herald the onset of the ski season. The average temperature decreases, the further south you travel. January and February (summer) are the warmest months and July is the coolest month of the year. Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD). There are banks and ATMs in all of the major towns and cities. Credit cards are also widely accepted. Languages: English and Maori are the official languages. Time zone: GMT +12 hours. From end September to early April, New Zealand time uses daylight saving when clocks are put forward by an additional hour (GMT +13 hours).
