Welcome to Dubai

emiratesholidays.com

The days of Dubai being a convenient global stopping-off point are long over. The city that we proudly call home is a modern marvel in itself, and a testament to human endeavour that begs to be both seen and experienced. From a humble desert community trading in pearls and simple commodities just 50 years ago, Dubai has undergone a mesmerising transformation into a world-class destination; a beacon of progress and a magnet for globetrotters.

Downtown delights The heart of modern Dubai lies in its Downtown district, featuring some stellar attractions for both first time and repeat visitors, and a global icon for a centrepiece. The world’s tallest building at 828 metres, the Burj Khalifa surges skywards like a huge mirrored comet. It is particularly impressive after sundown, when crowds are also drawn to nightly performances of the dancing Dubai Fountain, its spectacular illuminated displays expertly choreographed to music. Downtown Dubai also houses Dubai Mall, one of the most regularly visited buildings on the planet. Its famous focal point is Dubai Aquarium, a vast tank of over 30,000 fish, sharks and rays occupying three floors of the central atrium that visitors can walk through, ride across in a glass bottom boat, or even dive into!

Hit the beach Dubai’s resort beaches and pools are second-to-none, but in recent times its public beach areas have undergone a complete renaissance in order to provide an even better experience. Situated near Dubai Marina, The Beach at JBR provides laid-back, upmarket urban style by the sea. Sun loungers enjoy uninterrupted views across to the island of Bluewaters, a newly opened retail and entertainment complex that also houses the Dubai Eye (Ain Dubai), which when open, will be the world’s biggest observation wheel. Towards the north lies La Mer: an eclectic, Finally, there’s one of Dubai’s longer running institutions, Ski Dubai; an indoor ski resort at the Mall of the Emirates where the family can downhill, bobsled, zorb, or even waddle with the resident penguins. Bring the family Beyond the obvious attractions, Dubai has all the necessary ingredients for a most rewarding family holiday, with the major resorts and hotels featuring excellent pool facilities and kids clubs to keep their younger guests entertained. The city’s theme park landscape has seen some significant additions in recent years, notably Dubai Parks and Resorts, the Middle East’s largest integrated leisure and theme park that houses the Hollywood- inspired Motiongate, its Bollywood-themed counterpart, as well as LEGOLAND ® Dubai and LEGOLAND ® Water Park. Year-round excitement is guaranteed at IMG Worlds of Adventure, the world’s largest indoor theme park, where the Avengers rub shoulders with life sized dinosaurs and the Powerpuff Girls, all in the name of fun. Dubai’s waterparks are not to be missed, either. Set within Atlantis, The Palm, Aquaventure challenges you to ride the Aquaconda, the world’s largest water slide. Wild Wadi sits across from the iconic Burj al Arab hotel and offers rides and attractions for all ages, most notoriously the almost vertical- drop scream fest that is the Jumeirah Sceirah! A more leisurely option is a trip to The Green Planet, a rainforest ecosystem inside a biodome that supports 3,000 species of jungle plants, exotic birds and other critters. Wildlife lovers are also well served by the Dubai Safari Park, open during the winter months, where visitors can take in the big game animals of Africa and Asia at close quarters. Downtown’s most cultured addition is the stunningly designed Dubai Opera, which has already become the hub of the emirate’s thriving arts scene, supporting a year-round programme of performances of both regional and international renown.

Retail therapy If you’ve ever felt the urge to Shop the World in a day without the added hurdle or expense of a transatlantic flight, you can do just that in Dubai, where Bloomingdales, Harvey Nichols and Galeries Lafayette are within easy reach. With over 100 excellent shopping malls to choose from, a string of traditional souks and bustling local craft markets, Dubai is nothing if not a haven for the shopaholic. At Box Park, urban adventurers explore a contemporary, open-air and offbeat landscape that’s unique to Dubai. Over 200 converted shipping containers house some of Dubai’s coolest food, fashion and design outlets, as well as a boutique cinema. City Walk is Dubai’s downtown, design- inspired neighbourhood, which is a magnet for locals browsing high-end stores, culture vultures promenading through world-class street art, and folks indulging in afternoon tea or evening fine dining as they watch the world pass by. Dubai’s changing landscape Dubai continues to evolve with every year that passes, meaning there is always something new to experience here. The Dubai Frame sets a brand new architectural landmark on the skyline; one that stands 150 metres tall and excels in its position as a window between old and modern Dubai by providing superb views of both. The district of Al Seef adorns the banks of the iconic Dubai Creek in a meticulous recreation of the city’s trading heritage. Here you can explore narrow alleyways, or sikkas, and dine on the waterside promenade, as the traditional dhow boats drift past. The Dubai Water Canal makes it possible to traverse the city’s waterways under the span of several stunning new bridges from the Creek to the Gulf via the blossoming Business Bay. Dubai Creek Harbour is another waterside development due to complete in 2020 that could prove to be the jewel in the crown; three times bigger than Downtown, with a retail space nearly the double of Dubai Mall, and most impressively, a Tower that will outstretch even the Burj Khalifa. The future is bright and exciting for Dubai and its visitors. Between the two is Kite Beach; the city’s focal point for community beach life, where the laid-back morning swell of coffee hunters and joggers gives way to afternoon wave surfers and families enjoying the expansive stretch of golden sand. eye-catching and highly photogenic beachfront development of cabanas, boutique shops, restaurants, cafés and even Laguna, its own waterpark.

The choice between Walt Disney World , Universal Orlando Resort TM and LEGOLAND ® alone is as bewildering as riding on the famous Space Mountain rollercoaster! Nothing evokes romantic luxury like the Indian Ocean islands of Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles. Renowned for its stunning private island resorts, overwater villas and azure waters teeming with marine life, the Maldives are hard to beat. Spectacular white powder beaches also abound in laid- back Seychelles, where you can explore an archipelago of very different islands. Mauritius offers not only superb resorts but also a fascinating landscape wrapped in a distinctive Creole culture. The friendly and photogenic city of Sydney has its highly celebrated attractions, but it’s only a short trip from there to experience the absolute wilderness serenity of the Blue Mountains at the luxurious One&Only Wolgan Valley Resort.

Floating markets make for a unique experience. Cape Town has plenty to offer those in search of big brands and local crafts, not least at the lively and scenic Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. INDIAN OCEAN The epitome of desert island luxury, these destinations share a deserved reputation for picture perfect escapism and stunning hospitality in the deep blue embrace of the most inviting waters on the planet. However, each carries its own unique charms. From the stunning Maldivian atolls and mountain rainforests of Seychelles to the fascinating culture and geography of Mauritius, the Indian Ocean islands welcome not only honeymooners and couples in search of a revitalising retreat, but any traveller with a sense of romance and adventure in their hearts.

WHERE TO BE in the

Indian Ocean

The lush, coffee-rich surrounds of the village of Chamarel in Mauritius not only boast cascading waterfalls but also this unique natural phenomenon where layers of volcanic rock, water and eons of time have combined to reveal a picturesque display of earthen dunes in a rainbow of seven distinct colours. p. 28 Visit Chamarel Coloured Earths

Few romantic experiences can rival a private candle-lit dinner served on sheltered Maldivian sands at the edge of a gently rolling ocean. With most resorts designed with guests’ privacy in mind, you can expect the chance to dine under clear starry skies on a secluded stretch of beach, or even spend a special occasion getting spoiled on your own sandbank. p. 20 Dine on a private sandbank in the Maldives Spending time in the water with these iconic slow-moving aquatic beasts is high on the wish list of many an underwater adventurer. The good news for non-divers is that their placid filter-feeding nature ensures they are often found close to the water’s surface and happy to be in the company of humans. Whale sharks visit the waters of Seychelles in abundance between August and November. p. 40 For that fully immersive desert island experience (but with a safe passage back to your resort at the end of the day), the abundance of uninhabited islands in Maldives and Seychelles makes ‘getting away from it all’ a distinct possibility, whether it be by tour, private boat charter or even kayak. Just grab a snorkel, a picnic and a good book. May we suggest ‘Robinson Crusoe’? p. 16 Bask in the waters of a private island Board a catamaran and set sail to some of the smaller islands that fringe Mauritius. Anchor in a calm, secluded bay or turquoise lagoon and take the plunge for a swim or snorkel. Search the skies for white-tailed tropicbirds and rare pink pigeons or marvel at the multitude of fish that call the colourful coral gardens home. p. 28 Maldives is one of the best destinations in the world to experience an unforgettable encounter with these graceful giants of the deep, and one of the best locations for scuba diving anywhere. Mantas can be sighted there all year round, but are most active from June to October. With so many PADI accredited dive centres in Maldives, it’s the perfect place to spark a lifelong fascination with the undersea world. p. 16 Befriend the manta rays in Maldives Cruise with a catamaran in Mauritius Snorkel with whale sharks in Seychelles

The protected islands of the Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles support the world’s largest population of these gentle giants, providing a link to an ancient past when giant tortoises roamed freely on most continents of the Earth. The small and beautiful Curieuse, a short boat ride from Praslin, provides an accessible island home for several hundred of these fascinating creatures. p. 40 If you feel the need to step up the relaxed pace of beach life, then a hike to the summit of the most emblematic peak in Mauritius provides a challenging and exhilarating alternative, as well as breathtaking views over the entire island. Take a walk through the island’s rich cultural history and discover why a connection to slavery and the island’s colonial past has earned Le Morne Brabant UNESCO World Heritage Site status. p. 28 Hike Le Morne Brabant in Mauritius There are as many ox-carts as cars, and cycling is the main mode of transport on laid-back La Digue. The island is renowned as the home of Anse Source d’Argent, and other of the world’s most beautiful beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot. But don’t worry. The island measures only five kilometres from north to south, so once you’ve parked up your bike, you’ll have plenty of energy left for the hike to the beach. p. 40 Cycle around La Digue island in Seychelles

Look for the speedboat or seaplane   icons in the resort description and for more information please contact our travel experts. At a glance Emirates gateway: Velana International Airport / Malé International Airport Time zone: GMT +5 hours Currency: Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), which is a non-convertible currency, so you will not be able to exchange it outside the country. There are banks in the capital, Malé, and no ATMs at resorts, but credit cards and dollars will be widely accepted. Languages: Dhivehi, but English is widely spoken in resorts. Maldives is home to most of the world’s overwater villas; a true icon of luxurious escapism. Enjoy the serenity from your private deck or take a step straight into the Indian Ocean.

Renowned for its stunning private island resorts, overwater villas and azure waters teeming with marine life, Maldives is unparalleled when it comes to barefoot luxury. A haven for those that dive, surf, sail and snorkel, or just want to re-energise at their own pace while enjoying world-class hospitality.

Experiences Expect the extraordinary at your Maldives resort; alfresco cinemas, treetop hangouts, villas with waterslides, or underwater restaurants. Here, your travel fantasies are realised. The special topography of Maldives’ coralline islands means that most resorts have a ‘house’ reef which can be accessed directly from the beach. The clarity and temperature of the water make it one of the best snorkelling destinations in the world. Expect to encounter reef sharks, dolphins, turtles and shoals of colourful reef fish just metres from the shore. The Maldivian archipelago of tropical islands in a string of circular atolls is spectacular from the air. Choose a resort with a seaplane transfer for a remarkable aerial view. Experience golden hour on the water and take a sunset cruise on a traditional wooden boat, or dhoni. Join a snorkelling tour to the protected South Ari Atoll for a chance to swim with the largest fish in the ocean; the magnificent whale shark. Assist in a coral planting activity, a special experience which highlights the fragile beauty of Maldives’ marine ecosystem. All resorts boast an excellent array of guest facilities such as a dive centre and watersports centre, while those on larger islands may also feature tennis courts. Parents will love the ease of kids’ clubs. Be sure to check age restrictions, as these can vary between resorts.
