There are many approved hiking trails that let you venture into the canyon itself, but the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge is manageable at a three-hour round trip, and has the great reward of breathtaking views from the aptly named Ooh Aah Point. Get ready for plenty of ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ moments, watch out for the passing mule trains and make sure to take plenty of drinking water with you! p. 127

The ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, perched high on a spectacular misty mountain top, is one of the world’s most important archaeological treasures, and arguably the most awe-inspiring. For intrepid explorers, the site can be reached at the end of a snaking 39 kilometres hike up from Sacred Valley known as the Inca Trail, although most visitors arrive by train. This once ‘lost city’ reveals a mystery of palaces, plazas, temples and dwellings to be explored. p. 154 There’s so much of America’s history and culture locked up in a trip that links together its major east coast cities. Walking Boston is like strolling through an outdoor history museum, full of important sites and old world charm. New York City needs no introduction as the cultural melting pot of the nation, elegant Philadelphia boasts independence-era attractions, and Washington, D.C. holds the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill in its packed deck of cards. p. 127 Combine the sights of East Coast USA The Freedom Trail is a four-kilometre walk through downtown Boston linking 16 locations that hold a special significance in the history of USA. One such stop along the way is Faneuil Hall, once proclaimed the ‘Cradle of Liberty’ for its role in American independence, and today part of a daily open-air ‘festival marketplace’ that also encompasses the North Market, Quincy Market and South Market buildings. It’s a great place to browse for a local souvenir or two. p. 149 Walk the Freedom Trail in Boston

Whether it’s for the home team, the Chicago Cubs, or for visitors to Wrigley Field like the famous Dodgers, Yankees or Red Sox, take your seat up in the ‘bleachers’ and prepare to cheer on your team of choice. An evening spent in the electric atmosphere of a Major League Baseball game makes a fascinating pilgrimage for any sports fan, or anybody wanting to get to grips with one of the core pillars of American culture. p. 149 You will find it hard to resist a visit to Los Angeles without seeking out the renowned Hollywood sign, perched on a hillside overlooking the fabled neighbourhood. The Hollywood Walk of Fame encompasses over 2,500 large stars embedded into multiple sidewalks dedicated to legends of the entertainment industry. The good news is that it’s easy to find the star of your favourite idol with a map! p. 142 Take the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles Along with the Golden Gate Bridge, the heritage cable cars clanking up and down the steep climbs of San Francisco’s streets are the emblem of the city. Built in 1873, the world’s last manually operated cable car system is the perfect way to explore this iconic city. From the comfort of your seat you can gaze across the bay to Alcatraz Island, tour the vibrant city streets and be deposited at Fisherman’s Wharf, just in time for lunch. p. 142 It may be Los Angeles’ closest neighbour, but Orange County adopts a more relaxed ‘surf dude’ attitude, and is perhaps best known for the city of Anaheim, home to the original Disneyland Resort, along with the coastal suburbs of Newport and Huntington Beach. Ride the Star Wars themed Hyperspace Mountain rollercoaster at Disneyland or step back in time at the retro Knott’s Berry Farm for some Old West Americana charm. p. 146 Go play in Orange County, USA Climb San Francisco’s hills by cable car
