Experiences One of the region’s best-known attractions is Iguaçu Falls, which spans the border between Brazil and Argentina, and whose huge, tiered cascades can be visited from either country. While on the Brazilian side of Iguaçu, don’t miss a visit to the Parque das Aves, a collection of eight-metre high aviaries constructed in the heart of a forest that houses a myriad exotic and colourful birds. Brazil captivates with its lush rainforests, incredible biodiversity, playful beach culture and pulsating cities such as Rio de Janeiro. Rio bursts into spectacular life each year during Carnival, when hordes of revellers flock to the streets in outrageously flamboyant costumes and a riot of rhythm and colour. You can observe the statuesque progress of the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park, where its two metres-per-day icy creep often sends huge chunks crashing down dramatically into the water. Take a nautical safari on Lake Argentino for the best possible view. The renowned dance of tango originated in Argentina. Catch a tango performance while in Buenos Aires, and maybe even learn some steps yourself. Horses feature heavily in Argentine culture and the legend of the gaucho, the Argentine cowboy alone with his cattle
out on the Pampas, is well told. Take the chance to stay on a ranch and learn the way of the gaucho. Diverse Chile presents an amazing variety of landscapes across its long, narrow form. From the high peaks of the Andes in the north, down through central areas of lakes and muscat grape orchards, through to southern Patagonian fjords and glaciers, Chile is ripe for adventure. Visit Chile’s Atacama region to discover an other-worldly terrain of dry dunes, rock formations, salt lakes and hot spouting geysers.
