Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, Bali

INDONESIA Be there

To encounter the warm and soulful people of Bali and their deep sense of spirituality is to understand why this magical island has been enchanting visitors for many a year.

The sheer scope of Indonesia’s 17,000 or more scattered tropical islands means that the opportunities for adventure are as diverse as its multi-cultured people. Bali may be the tourist heart of the nation, but there is so much more to uncover, from dense rainforests and volcanic landscapes to deserted white-sand beaches.

Experiences Indonesia’s best established tourist routes revolve around a handful of islands. Java is home to the dynamic capital city of Jakarta, along with Yogyakarta, a city of culture that’s also a gateway to some of Indonesia’s most popular ancient monuments. The spectacular beaches, lush mountainous heart, acclaimed cuisine and nightlife of Bali attracts visitors from across the globe, as do its quieter neighbours such as Lombok and Komodo, home of the eponymous dragons. Java’s Borobodur predates Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and is one of the world’s

most impressive Buddhist temples. The nearby towering 9th century Hindu temple complex of Prambanan is equally inspiring. Imposing Mount Bromo is a sight to behold and a notoriously active volcano. It can be safely viewed on a sunrise jeep tour to neighbouring Mount Penanjakan. Visit a batik workshop for a hands- on experience in crafting your very own traditional garment in the iconic Indonesian style. For a virtually unspoiled alternative to Bali, it’s a short boat ride to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida for a day trip or overnight stay.
