In the central highlands, summers are hot and winters mild. The most popular travel season is December to March. Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Adults and kids alike will love the wild experience of a safari at Yala or Udawulawe National Parks, where leopards, elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears can be seen. There’s also whale watching, rafting, surfing and a host of family friendly beaches. Whales and dolphins are regularly drawn to the waters around Trincomalee, Mirissa or Kalpitiya.

The stretch of railway between Kandy and Ella is incredibly picturesque. The train rattles through a rolling landscape of farms overlooked by mountains, small villages and vast tea plantations. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a jewel amongst Sri Lanka’s many treasures. Be enchanted by the famous painted frescoes amidst the wilderness of the ancient ruins.
