GRAND TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & MAGNIFICENT NEW ZEALAND CRUISE 2019 12

Stylish, arty Melbourne is both dynamic and cosmopolitan, and it's proud of its place as Australia’s sporting and cultural capital.

Consistently rated among the “world’s most livable cities” in quality-of-life surveys, where splendid Victorian buildings that sprang up in the wake of the gold rush still stand. This is Melbourne’s heart, which you can explore at a leisurely pace today. In Southbank, one of the newer precincts south of the city center, the sprawling Crown Melbourne entertainment complex

and the Southgate Centre’s bars, restaurants, and shops have refocused Melbourne’s vision on the Yarra River. Just a hop away, Federation Square— with its host of restaurants, galleries, and museums—has become a civic hub for both Melburnians and visitors. A subtler city icon, its “laneways” thread the city center between major streets and are home to fascinating bars, cafés, shops, and art galleries.

GRAND TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & MAGNIFICENT NEW ZEALAND CRUISE 2019 14

While every other Australian city was settled before Federation in 1901, the youthful capital was first called Canberra in 1913 making it the only Australian city founded when the nation existed. It’s not your colonial capital; it’s an Australian invention conceived of by visionary American architect Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahony Griffin. Today, the city boasts expansive open spaces, broad boulevards, aesthetics influenced by the 19th-century Arts and Crafts Movement, and a seamless alignment

of built and natural elements. Recent designer precincts around the lake – New Acton, Kingston Foreshore and a work in progress boardwalk around to the Acton Peninsula – have added a cosmopolitan atmosphere at the city’s heart. During parliamentary sitting weeks, the city buzzes with national politics. When not talking policy, the city’s developing a reputation for its festivals – the legendary Floriade, National Folk Festival and the freshly minted Canberra Writers Festival.

Wellington DAY 18

On a sunny, windless day, Wellington is up there with the best of them. For starters it’s lovely to look at, sitting on a hook-shaped harbour ringed with ranges that wear a cloak of snow in winter. Victorian timber architecture laces the bushy hillsides above the harbour, which resonate with native birdsong. As cities go, it’s really rather small but the compact nature of the downtown area gives it a bigger-city GRAND TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & MAGNIFICENT NEW ZEALAND CRUISE 2019 38
