VISITING: TBILISI, KUTAISI, AKHALTSIKHE, GUDAURI DAY 1 MALTA - TBILISI
Georgia. After a pleasant walk through this historic town, we’ll continue our journey towards Western Georgia and the city of Kutaisi, once the capital of the legendary kingdom of Colchis. According to myth, Kutaisi was home to the famous Golden Fleece, sought by the Argonauts with the help of the king’s daughter, Medea. Take a leisurely walk through the cozy streets of Kutaisi, exploring its narrow lanes, unique sights, and lively atmosphere. Discover a variety of intriguing spots, local pubs, and vibrant bars that showcase the city’s character and charm. We will end the day with dinner at a traditional restaurant, followed by an overnight stay in Kutaisi. DAY 4 KUTAISI - THE AGRICULTURAL MARKET - PROMETHEUS GROTTO - AKHALTSIKHE In the morning after breakfast, we’ll visit the vibrant market in Kutaisi, where locals sell fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, and fish daily. Exploring this market offers an authentic glimpse into local life. Next, we’ll head to the Prometheus Cave, one of Georgia’s natural wonders. The cave tour takes about an hour, during which we’ll explore the stunning Halls of the Argonauts, Colchis, Medea, Love, Prometheus, and Iberia. On our way to Akhaltsikhe, we’ll stop in the village of Shrosha, famous for its long-standing tradition of pottery-making.
While the local economy is still largely based on pottery sales, villagers face uncertainty as a new highway will bypass the village, and the proposed new market will be located further away. We’ll continue our journey south through Georgia’s diverse landscapes. Here, the humid forests give way to rocky terrain, leading us to the breathtaking volcanic plateau of Javakheti. Our day concludes with an overnight stay in Akhaltsikhe and dinner at the hotel. DAY 5 AKHALTSIKHE - VARDZIA CAVE TOWN - RABATI After breakfast, on the way to Vardzia, we’ll traverse the stunning landscapes of the Mtkvari Valley, where medieval terraces once used for orchards and vineyards still dot the hillsides. We’ll make a photographic stop at the Khertvisi Fortress, a 10th century structure that offers sweeping views of the valley. Vardzia, a city that once housed 50,000 people and spanned 9 stories, was heavily damaged by earthquakes and invasions over the centuries. Today, however, the site is still home to ancient churches, refectories, cellars, accommodations, a pharmacy, and more. The highlight of our visit is the 12th-century Church of the Virgin Mary, known for its exceptional frescoes, including a portrait of King Tamar, painted during her lifetime. We’ll also have the opportunity to exit the city through the ancient medieval tunnels.
